The fire-zone case for iron

The single most important fencing fact in the Porter Ranch foothills is fire. The lots closest to the open space north of the 118 sit in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, and the 2008 Sesnon Fire off Oat Mountain is a reminder of what the Santa Ana wind can drive. Defensible space guidance calls for non-combustible material close to the structure, and that is exactly where iron belongs. Steel and iron do not ignite or carry flame the way a solid wood fence can, so a run of iron within the first several feet of the house does real protective work.

Steel, iron, or aluminum

What people call wrought iron today is usually welded tubular steel, and we build in three related materials:

On the engineered cut-and-fill pads, iron follows a grade cleanly. Panels can be raked to angle with a slope or stepped in level sections, and because the pickets are open the fence takes far less wind load than a solid panel, which matters on the exposed runs where the Santa Ana gusts hit hardest. Posts are still set deep in concrete footings sized for the run, because a heavy iron gate in particular is only as steady as the post that carries it.
